Waterdeep

Waterdeep is the Crown of the North, a sprawling city of traders, politicians, and criminals. All types of people cross paths inside Waterdeep. It is a place where almost anything can be bought or sold. Waterdavians, as the local inhabitants are known, generally hold adventurers in high regard, given that many of the city's most esteemed citizens are former adventurers and that the city has been saved countless times by adventurers over the years.

Waterdeep is a city of firm laws and swift justice. Adventurers hell-bent on slaughter and plunder will fare poorly n the City of Splendours. The punishments for assault, arson, theft, and murder are severe, regardless of the reason for the crime. The City Watch are ever vigilant for criminal behavior yet somehow criminal factions continue to plague the densely populated areas of Waterdeep. The most noted criminal group is the Xanathar group. Various Zhentarim factions also compete for influence in the lower wards.

The year is 1495 in the Present Age. The city is run by a Council of Lords. The current Open Lord of Waterdeep is Lady Laeral Silverhand. There is much speculation as to the identity of the Masked Lords but between them, Waterdeep has enjoyed a period of relative calm and prosperity despite turbulence elsewhere across Faerun.

Religions spring up regularly in Waterdeep. Temples and shrines to numerous gods are scattered across the city. Cultural events revolve around religion and also drinking in the popular Inns. Guilds represent a major element of the city's social structure. Most professions have formed a guild to help align interests amongst their members.

Undermountain

Undermountain is the legendary dungeon complex designed by Halaster Blackcloak, the Mad Mage. Adventurers regularly try to claim their fortune by delving deep into the darkness. It is such an old labyrinth that numerous factions have made the place their home. Most tend to find themselves underground precisely because they do not want light to be shone onto their activities.

What fills the dungeon is the subject of outlandish tales by the adventurers who spin their yarns to gain fame and renown. It is a dynamic enviroment so as adventurers make progress through the dungeon setting, their impacts are felt by those who live there.

As well as Undermountain, links exist somewhere beneath Waterdeep to the scoundrels home of Skullport as well as the foreboding Underdark. How these link into Waterdeep and Undermountain are disputed by even those who have seen each place.

Trollskull Manor Trollskull Manor Floorplan

Four stories tall and boasting balconies, a turret, and five chimneys, the abandoned building is one of the grandest in Trollskull Alley. The characters first arrive, the tavern's taproom is filled with broken furniture, tarnished silverware, casks of wine that have turned to vinegar, and worthless detritus. The tavern's other rooms are all empty, except for cobwebs, dust, and harmless rats.
The Yawning Portal tavern is run by Durnan, a grizzled veteran adventurer. He keeps a weary eye on those attempting to use the Yawning Portal's direct link to Undermountain because of a tendency for unprepared adventurers to act as bait to lure monsters up into his business. The emergence from the portal itself of a Troll covered in Stirges only worsened his mood.

The Portal was also home to a number of other unusual characters including Meloon Wardragon who had received the group of adventurers after they had been sent his way by Malcolnnen in the vilage of Amphail, something about him suggested a link to the Grey Hands organisation. He was a little cynical about the current Open Lord, Laeral Silverhand's ability to keep things calm and reminisced about the previous Open Lord, Dagult Neverember.

The Bard, "Threestrings" spent plenty of time in the Portal likely to keep an eye on the lovely Bonnie. Threestrings had leanings to the Harper organisation and warned of the presence of Zhentarim within the city, including possibly their leader Manshoon.

A fight between a Half-Orc and a band of thugs left one man dead, that man had a tattoo on his head in the form of an eye.

The writer and socialite Volo offered 100 gold pieces, known as Dragons, to each member of the group if they could find his friend, Floon Blagmaar. He had been last seen at the Skewered Dragon, a tavern on Fillet Lane in Dock Ward. He gave each group member 10 gold pieces up front as a gesture of goodwill.

Xoblob, the owner of the Old Xoblob Shop also on Fillet Lane, told the group that a man resembling Floon's description was abducted outside of the Skewered Dragon a couple of days prior along with another person he was with. The other man had a purple cloak that the group promised to bring to Xoblob once they found this man.

Patrons (dock workers) at the Skewered Dragon described a group of 'snakes' having beaten someone resembling Floon and a friend in a purple cloak after someone who matched Volo's description had already left. The 'snakes' were known to have a warehouse around the corner on Candle Lane.

The warehouse was identifiable by a snake-like symbol. Inside the warehouse were 4 Kenku and a dozen dead bodies. They appeared to be the results of a clash between Zhentarim and Xanathar Guild. The Kenku implied Floon had been tied in the backroom. They referenced Xanathar as well as mentioning sewers and yellow markings showing the way. The Kenku were all killed by the adventurers. Gimbat found 15 silver bars and 4 paintings. Lorxain found a magical parchment.

In the backroom was someone who turned out to be Renear Neverember, son of the deposed former Open Lord of Waterdeep. Renear suggested Floon had been taken instead of him in a case of mistaken identity and suggested criminal groups might have been searching for a huge cache of gold which his father was alleged to have hidden somewhere in the city. The group recommended Renear find somewhere safe to retreat to - the Yawning Portal was suggested before taking a short rest. A trap door leading to the sewer system was found underneath one of the crates.

In the sewers, 2 Carrion Crawlers were devouring a body but it was impossible to discern what the body was. The group met a Halfling Wererat and gave it some food. It had been helping "The Eyes" with observation of the surrounding area and implied it had pointed The Eyes to where "The Snakes" had bee holing up. The Wererat mentioned there were others in its group running errands for The Eyes.

A Xanathar hideout was found in the sewers. It had bedding for more than were found. A Goblin and a Duergar were seen and killed. A Grey Ooze was in a cesspit and had clearly killed others. The Half-Orc Grumshar was slain as was an Intellect Devourer tossed by a tall, creepy, tentacled creature who left the scene. The group found a device with eye insignia on it in the room the tentacled-creature had entered. The creature was nowhere to be seen.

Some coins were discovered as well as Grumshar's spellbook, 2 potions of healing, and a purple cloak. A passage was discovered in an ante chamber leading through to home brewery where a Halfling offered to supply future brewed needs for the group.

Volo was delighted to see Floon again in the Yawning Portal. He was unable to provide the coin he had promised but instead offered the deed to Trollskull Manor, a tavern in the North Ward which the group accepted. He also provided 20GP. The group were approached by Obaya Uday who offered to provide restorative treatment if a deal could be struck. Obaya Uday offered to provide Greater Restoration if the group were to find the Selamac of Q!uthing so she could bequeathe it to her patron though warned that if the group failed to provide for services she rendered, they would be afflicted by curses.
